Gießen is very much connected to the name of Justus Liebig, a famous analytical chemist.

In the middle of the city, you can find a garden full of trees, plants and flowers : the botanic garden of the Justus-Liebig-Universität.



The garden was a present for the university to make a ?hortus medicus? (medicinal herb garden).It is the oldest botanic garden in Germany, which is not destroyed or transfered.The first german flora-studies were made in our botanic garden (1609-1625).


In 1699 the first greenhouse of glass was built.Today the botanic garden is a health resort in the middle of Giessen, everybody finds relaxation and silence there.
